How a hybrid heat pump water heater works
A standard electric water heater heats water with electric elements. A Rheem hybrid instead pulls heat from the surrounding air — like a refrigerator working in reverse — and moves it into the tank, using far less electricity. It keeps electric elements as backup for times of heavy demand.
As a bonus, it cools and dehumidifies the space around it. In a hot Columbia garage or utility room, that's a welcome side effect.
Is a hybrid right for your home?
Hybrids are a great fit when you're replacing an electric tank and have:
Enough space and surrounding air — garages, utility rooms and basements usually work well; small closets may need venting or louvered doors
A place for the condensate to drain

Rebates and financing
Dominion Energy South Carolina residential electric customers who replace an electric water heater with an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heater may qualify for a Dominion heat pump water heater rebate when a licensed contractor does the installation. Applications are generally due within 90 days, so keep your invoice. Financing is also available for qualifying installations — your plumber can walk you through it in person.

Will a hybrid water heater work in my garage?
Often, yes. Garages, utility rooms and basements usually have the space and air a hybrid needs. It works best where the air stays within the manufacturer's operating range, and it cools and dries the surrounding air as it runs — which many Columbia homeowners appreciate in a hot garage.
Is there a rebate for a hybrid water heater?
If you're a Dominion Energy South Carolina residential electric customer replacing an electric water heater with an ENERGY STAR certified heat pump water heater, you may qualify for a Dominion rebate when it's installed by a licensed contractor. Check the current terms before you buy. The federal 25C tax credit ended for installations after December 31, 2025.
What maintenance does a hybrid need?
Clean the air filter regularly, keep the condensate drain clear and flush the tank as the manual recommends. Your plumber can show you how at installation.
How much does Rheem repair or replacement cost?
Our residential diagnostic fee is $89, waived when you go ahead with the repair at the quoted price. For a replacement, you'll get one firm installed price on site, and your plumber can walk you through financing in person.
